I’m sure you’ve heard about the guy who gave Derek Jeter back the ball from his 3000th hit…the Yankees gave him a bunch of stuff, and now he owes taxes on it. So then, several companies volunteered to pay his taxes… but wouldn’t he owe tax on that too? Of course he would, but the beauty of cash is, you can give enough to cover it!

Suppose for example all gifts are taxed 20%, and the balls and jerseys and box seats they gave him are worth a total of $200,000. He owes $40,000 in taxes. If some one gave him the $40,000, he would indeed owe $8000 on that $40,000. So instead they give him $50,000…and now the tax he owes on all he’s received…$200,000 + $50,000 = $250,000…is exactly $50,000…so he’s free and clear on the original stuff. But WTF, huh?
