Stolf’s Blog 1/12/2012

Last year in this space…Jan 5th, 6th, and 7th…I examined the impact the NFL’s conference and divisional structure has on who gets into the postseason,…specifically, do all the best teams, and only the best teams, qualify? I did this by listing all 32 teams, best record to worst, then noting what I called the In-Record…all teams with this record or better are in…and the Out-Record…all teams with this record or worse are out. Ideally, the 32 teams would be divided into just 2 groups by these 2 marks.

When they weren’t…the teams caught in between I called the Bubble-Zone…some teams got in, others didn’t…and sometimes teams with better records were out while teams with equal or worse records were in, which to me betrays a fundamental lack of fairness. Since the merger in 1970, how many of the 41 seasons thru 2010 had no Bubble-Zone, hence were perfectly fair…the answer is: 5….which seems a little low, nez pah? Here’s how it shook down, by different playoff formats…

2011 was pretty bad, altho not the worst: 11 teams in the Bubble Zone…3 teams at 9-7 (2 in, 1 out)…and 8 teams at 8-8 (1 in, 7 out). Once again, a division won by an 8-8 team (AFC West, Denver) skews it…only the 9-7 team left out has any real right to gripe…the Tennessee Tuxedos. BTW…this is the 8th time there have been 10 or more teams in the Bubble-Zone…2009 was the worst with 16…7 in, 9 out. Guess I’m the only person in the world who thinks there has to be a better way…

POUTINE-ON-A-STICK

Marvel revolutionized comic books in the 1960s with “relevant” superheroes…they had emotions and problems and anxieties…like Spiderman, they had “hangups.” Meanwhile, DC plugged along with their tried and true brand of idiotic sci-fi insanity. Marvel was a sensation, and we all dug it. But looking back on it today, I find it all pretty tedious…while DC’s over-the-top goofiness is as bizarre and entertaining as ever. Long live the Balloon Man!
